The medical staff at the hospital won't tell me much because I'm not family, and there are some legal restrictions on what they can tell "non family". They did say that they'll probably admit him ("90% chance") to the hospital and that they're treating him for his breathing difficulties. They are taking this seriously.
They sounded confident but serious, but I guess that's a requirement for working in a hospital anymore.
Because he's Canadian, he's covered by their (federal?) insurance, but because the hospital is American, they don't know how to deal with Canadian insurance worth beans. Another place to pray: that they'd get all the paperwork taken care of and not make a big fuss out of this.
